Hi everyone! So I stumbled across this Readathon on a post by ZeZee with books.
It looks amazing! I have always wanted to join in on a Readathon, but tend to find them late in the game. Luckily, April has just started, and I have plenty of time to complete my O.W.L.s!
So, what exactly is this O.W.L. Readathon?
Basically, it is themed around Harry Potter and the wizarding exams they have to take during their school years. The O.W.L.’s (Ordinary Wizarding Levels) are taken during a wizard’s 5th year of schooling. In a wizard’s 7th year, they take their N.E.W.T.s (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests), which are much more difficult. These tests direct a student to a particular career path, which is exactly what we will be doing!
This Readathon will take place April 1st-30th
During it, we will decide on a career path that we want to start, which will then guide us toward which O.W.L.s to take. An absolutely amazing Career Guide has been created by Book Roast, and the printable version can be accessed here.
Depending on the career you choose, you will then have to complete specific O.W.L.s (aka reading prompts) in order to attain a “grade” on your O.W.L.s. The printable version of these prompts broken down by exam subject can be found here, again created so wonderfully by Book Roast. The O.W.L.s are graded based on the total number of exams you complete, which translates to:
Acceptable = 2+ Exams Completed
Exceeds Expectations = 6+ Exams Completed
Outstanding = 9+ Exams Completed
Each career will require a minimum score for specific exams. I will get to this later on when I introduce which career I have chosen for myself!
Even if you don’t want to choose a career (maybe you haven’t figured out what you want to do in your magical life just yet), you can just complete the exams as you wish! It’s all up to you 🙂 Obviously, we all want Outstanding scores on our O.W.L.’s but even obtaining an Acceptable will allow you to pass your O.W.L.s and move on to the N.E.W.T.s (to come in August)!
I chose the career path of Hogwarts Professor!
As an aspiring English Teacher, I thought that this would be the perfect position! However, rather than teaching English, I definitely want to teach Potions! It just looks and sounds like so much fun and excitement.
So, here are the O.W.L. requirements. I must pass:
- A subject you wish to teach
- Defense Against the Dark Arts
- 5 additional subjects of your choice
I will worry about N.E.W.T. requirements later, after I have shown that I can pass my O.W.L.s first! Also, if this proves too much for me, a career as a Potioneer will be my fallback! As such, I would have to pass Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Herbology, and Potions.
I am first working on my Herbology O.W.L. with Settlers by Jessica T. Rogers
Luckily for me, this was already on my April TBR! By finishing this book, I will have completed my Herbology O.W.L., which calls for reading a book with a plant on the cover.
Good luck to all you wizarding folk out there! Don’t let the muggles catch sight of you!
Are you also participating in the Magical Readathon?? If so, let me know in the comments below! What is your career path? What are some of the books you are reading?
