Book Haul: 38 NEW BOOKS

I scored HUGE with this book haul (pre-COVID, of course)! I just happened across an event on Facebook that showed a used book sale occurring in my town, where they were selling books for $1-3 for the first 3 days and then on the last day you could fill a bag (like a GIANT plastic bag they gave you) for ONLY $5! Needless to say I took advantage of this fortuitous opportunity…

Here’s what I ended up with:IMG_0252

38 books total!! All for the low, low price of $10 (2 giant plastic bags’ worth on the last day)

So let’s break these down into some more manageable categories, shall we?

Books in a Series:img_0249.jpg

I’ve seen the movies on Divergent, but hadn’t gotten a chance to try out the book yet. I picked it up in a bookstore when the first movie came out, but I didn’t particularly like the writing style at first glance. Hopefully, my first impression is wrong, because I loved the movies!

As for the  Palace of Kings, the back cover blurb just sounded interesting 🙂

Haven’t read this yet. But I’ve been wanting to since it came out! No, I haven’t seen the movie… Don’t spoil it!

These were honestly cover buys. They’re just so  pretty! Hopefully the story lives up to their covers!

I don’t know much about these novels, but have heard good things about the authors!

I have heart VERY mixed reviews about this series. I am a HUGE fan of the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, and many WoT forums/groups both recommend and condemn this series… So, I am not sure what to think. I figured I might as well buy it and try it out! If I hate it, I can just put them on my bookshelf in my classroom and maybe one of my students will enjoy it.

Classics:

I have already read Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, and The Iliad, but all were years ago in high school. I am looking forward to reading them again now in my adult years to see if I catch any new nuances! I am also excited to finally start on some of the other classics that I have not yet had a chance to read.

How do you feel about classic novels? Love ’em? Hate ’em? They are definitely an acquired…read… in my opinion, but I worth the effort. It might help that I’m an English teacher lol!

Miscellaneous:

I have heard great things about LE Modesitt, Jr. I am looking forward to starting this new series! I actually already have a few other books of his on my bookshelves 🙂

I got these two for my fiance because he loves realistic war books.

Have you read any of these books? Any that look interesting? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Nice one! The Death Gate Cycle isn’t bad, and some is very good (I prefer their Dragonlance books, and there is some mild crossover). Terry Goodkind is largely reviled as a human being in the writing community, partially because of some of the dick things he’s said about people he’s worked with (like his cover artist). Also, after the third book, it’s mostly just him spouting his ideals and it’s very downhill. Mark Lawrence books are an acquired taste (very violent), but he gets better with each book and I REALLY liked the most recent series.

And now I’m done with the opinions no one asked for.

  2. Nice haul! There’s usually a big used book sale this month to support the local womens shelter, but it was canceled for the first time in 20+ years because of Covid. I miss browsing for books.

The Mark Lawrence trilogy is great grimdark fantasy, and the Death Gate Cycle is one of my favorite epic fantasies. Sword of Truth I have a love/hate relationship with – the first 3 books are amazing, and then he starts getting repetitive and preachy with his political philosophies, and then what should have been the last 3 books were amazing again . . . except he went and started a new series that basically just copy/pasted the original. Ugh.
